Hey Lykkers! We all know how easy it is to toss items in our car when we're rushing or preparing for the unknown. It feels like a great idea to leave a few essentials in the car – that way, you're always ready for whatever life throws your way.
But did you know that some of the things we often leave in our cars might actually be causing more harm than good? Whether it’s the intense heat of summer or the frigid cold in winter, certain items can be seriously damaged by the temperature extremes inside a parked car.
Let’s talk about what not to leave in your car (and why) so you can keep your stuff safe, your car in good shape, and your health intact!
1. Plastic Water Bottles - A Hidden Danger:
We’ve all done it – leave a plastic water bottle in the car, thinking we’ll drink it later. But did you know that leaving plastic bottles in the heat can be risky? When the temperature rises, chemicals like BPA (Bisphenol A) and Antimony can leach into the water.
These chemicals are linked to serious health issues, including cancer and heart disease. Plus, once a bottle is opened, it’s a perfect breeding ground for bacteria if left in a hot car. So next time, keep your water bottles out of the sun and avoid drinking from ones that have been sitting there for a while!
2. Electronics - Keep Them Cool:
It’s tempting to leave your phone, tablet, or laptop in the car, but high heat can cause havoc on electronics, especially devices with lithium-ion batteries. In extreme temperatures, the battery life can be drastically reduced, or worse, it can leak or even explode! That’s a risk no one wants to take. So, remember to always keep your devices cool and take them with you when you leave the car. Your tech (and safety) will thank you.
3. Sunglasses - Not Just for the Sun:
We all love leaving our sunglasses in the car, ready to grab them for a sunny day. But did you know the heat can warp the frames and overheat the lenses, making them uncomfortable or even damaged? If left on the dashboard, the sun’s rays can act like a magnifying glass and potentially even cause a fire! Yikes! Keep your shades in a safe place, like a case or your bag, to keep them in top condition.
4. Skincare Products - Not All About Beauty:
Leaving your sunscreen, moisturizers, and makeup in the car might seem harmless, but it can be more damaging than you think. When exposed to extreme heat, the active ingredients in skincare products can break down, making them less effective. For example, sunscreen loses its protective power when it’s exposed to heat for too long. Even worse, the pressure from heat can cause cosmetic products to explode, creating a mess that will ruin your car interior. It’s best to store your beauty products in a cool place, not your glove compartment!
5. Medications - Protect Your Health:
If you have medication that you rely on, whether it’s over-the-counter painkillers or prescriptions, storing them in a car can be risky. Most medications need to be kept at a specific temperature to maintain their effectiveness. Heat can cause the active ingredients to break down, rendering them useless. Always check the label for storage instructions, and avoid leaving them in the car, especially in extreme temperatures.
6. Food - Keep It Fresh:
If you’ve just picked up some groceries or snacks and need to run a few errands, resist the urge to leave perishable food in the car. Foods like dairy, meats, and even some snacks can spoil quickly if left in hot conditions. In summer, the heat can be intense, making it risky to leave food in the car for more than a few minutes. It’s best to place perishable food in a cooler or take it inside immediately.
To wrap it up, while it’s tempting to leave a few items in your car, not everything is made to withstand the changing temperatures inside your vehicle. By being mindful of what you leave behind, you can avoid potential damage, health risks, and costly repairs. Take the extra minute to bring your essentials with you, and your car – and belongings – will be happier for it!
