Most of us rely on our cars every day—but how many of us actually adjust our car care based on the season?
Just like how we switch from shorts to jackets, our vehicles also need different types of attention when the weather changes.
Whether we're dealing with freezing mornings or blazing hot afternoons, doing a few seasonal checks can save us time, stress, and money in the long run. Let's go through the key points together so we can keep our cars in great shape—rain or shine.
Winter Care: Cold Weather Can Be Tough on Cars
Winter brings low temperatures, and that means our cars have to work harder to start and run smoothly. Here's what we should check when the cold hits:
1. Check the Battery
Cold weather slows down the chemical reactions inside the battery, making it weaker. If our car is taking longer to start, the battery could be the reason. Get it tested or replaced before it dies unexpectedly.
Tip: A car battery usually lasts 2–4 years. If ours is older than that, winter is a risky time to push it further.
2. Use the Right Engine Oil
In winter, we want engine oil that flows easily even in cold temperatures. Look for oil labeled with a "W" (for winter), like 5W-30. This type of oil helps our engine start faster and stay protected during cold starts.
3. Protect the Cooling System
Ironically, cooling systems matter in winter too. If our antifreeze is old or diluted, it might not stop the water inside the radiator from freezing. That could damage the engine badly.
Tip: Make sure the antifreeze level is right and the fluid is still effective. Most shops can check this quickly.
4. Switch to Winter Tires
If we live somewhere with snow or icy roads, regular tires just won't cut it. Winter tires give us better grip and control, especially when braking or turning.
Even in places without snow, colder temperatures make tires harder and less grippy. So if our area regularly drops below 7°C, winter tires are a smart choice.
5. Keep the Fuel Tank Half Full
This may sound odd, but it helps prevent moisture from forming in the tank, which can freeze and cause issues with fuel lines. Also, if we ever get stuck or delayed, we'll be thankful for the extra fuel to keep the heater running.
Summer Care: Heat Brings Its Own Set of Problems
While winter is tough, summer heat can also do a number on our car. Here's how we can stay cool and prevent breakdowns in hot weather.
1. Watch the Cooling System
Summer means higher engine temperatures. That's why a well-functioning radiator and coolant system is crucial. If the engine overheats, it could lead to serious damage.
Tip: Check coolant levels regularly and make sure there are no leaks. If your temperature gauge goes up fast, stop driving and let the engine cool down.
2. Air Conditioning Check
Driving in a hot car with no A/C? No thanks. Before peak summer hits, test the system. If it's blowing warm air, it might need a gas recharge or a filter change.
Also, remember to use the A/C regularly even in cooler months. It keeps the system in shape and prevents seals from drying out.
3. Check Tire Pressure
Hot weather makes air expand, which can cause overinflated tires. This affects grip and makes them more likely to burst, especially during long drives.
Tip: Check tire pressure at least once a month and before road trips. Don't forget the spare tire too!
4. Protect the Car's Interior
Heat can fade the dashboard, dry out the steering wheel, and warp plastics. Use sunshades or park in the shade to avoid direct sunlight.
Bonus tip: Keep a window slightly cracked if it's safe, to let hot air escape and reduce pressure inside the car.
5. Replace Wiper Blades
Wiper blades can dry out and break in the sun. Summer storms might hit hard, and we'll need good visibility. Replace the blades if they're leaving streaks or making noises.
All-Season Habits to Keep in Mind
While each season needs its own focus, some things stay true all year:
• Regular oil changes
• Clean air filters
• Brake checks
• Routine inspections
Keeping a seasonal maintenance checklist can help us avoid forgetting key steps.
