Imagine a road trip where every turn reveals a new breathtaking view. That’s Highway 8 for us, stretching from Timaru on the east coast to Haast on the West Coast.
This route winds through rivers, lakes, mountains, and valleys, giving us a perfect snapshot of South Island’s diverse landscapes.
Highway 8 is about 400 kilometers long, and we recommend 3–5 days to enjoy it fully, stopping for hikes, photography, and cultural experiences. Renting a car in Timaru or Christchurch is easiest, with daily rates around USD 36–72 depending on vehicle type.

Start at Timaru

Timaru, a quiet coastal town, is our starting point. Caroline Bay is open daily, free to visit, and perfect for a morning walk or picnic. The South Canterbury Museum (open 10 a.m.–4 p.m., closed Sundays) gives insight into local history, with an entry fee of about USD 5. For breakfast or brunch, we suggest cafés like Four Seasons Bakery or Espresso Café, with meals ranging from USD 4–7. Before leaving town, it’s wise to refuel and stock up on snacks and water, as some stretches of Highway 8 have limited services.

Mackenzie Country: Lakes Tekapo & Pukaki

Driving inland, we enter Mackenzie Country, famous for turquoise lakes and vast plains.
Lake Tekapo:
- Visit the Good Shepherd Chapel (open daily, free entry).
- For night stargazing, tours run from 8–10 p.m., costing around USD 24 per person.
- Best visiting time: early morning for soft light photography, or clear nights for stargazing.
Lake Pukaki:
- Offers iconic views of Mount Cook.
- Free to access, best at sunrise or sunset.
- Accommodation nearby: lodges and motels USD 72–120 per night.
Transportation tip: We recommend driving slowly along this stretch, stopping at lookouts and designated parking areas for photos. Roads are well-paved but windy.

Mount Cook National Park

Mount Cook National Park is a highlight along Highway 8.
- Mueller Valley Track: 3–4 hours round-trip, open 24/7, free entry.
- Scenic flights: Offer aerial glacier views, costing USD 150–210, operating daily 8 a.m.–5 p.m. (weather dependent).
- Accommodation: Aoraki Mount Cook Village, lodges USD 90–180 per night.

Tips: Wear layered clothing, as weather changes rapidly. Hiking poles are helpful for rocky sections.

Twizel: Adventure Stop

Twizel is a practical stop for supplies, fuel, and activities.
- Fuel stations open 7 a.m.–9 p.m.
Adventure options:
- Kayaking on lakes USD 24–36/hour.
- Mountain bike rentals USD 18–30/day.
- Accommodation: motels USD 60–90/night.
- Dining: local cafés and eateries, meals USD 9–15.
We recommend a short overnight stay to rest before continuing west.

Wanaka and Queenstown Detour

Highway 8 allows a scenic detour to Wanaka (30 min off-route).
- Wanaka Tree & Lake Wanaka: Free, best early morning or late afternoon.
- Roys Peak Hike: 5–6 hours, free, moderate difficulty. Bring water and snacks.
- Queenstown: Optional detour for gondola rides (USD 27–36), lake cruises USD 21–30.
Accommodation ranges from USD 90–150/night in Wanaka, USD 108–180 in Queenstown. Best time: November–March for hiking and water activities; June–August for snow-capped views.
