When we step close to Lower Yellowstone Falls, we can’t help but be amazed by the thunderous water plunging into the canyon below.
Dropping 308 feet (94 meters), this is the tallest waterfall in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, and one of the most breathtaking sights in the park.
The colorful canyon walls and the powerful flow of the river make it a must-see destination. Let’s explore all the details we need to plan the perfect visit—from tickets and trails to dining, transportation, and helpful tips.

Park Entrance and Tickets

Yellowstone National Park charges USD 35 per vehicle for a 7-day pass, which allows entry for all passengers and covers access to both Upper and Lower Falls. If we enter by bike, foot, or as pedestrians, the fee is USD 20 per person for 7 days. Yellowstone is open year-round, but access to Lower Falls via the main roads is generally best from May through October, as snow may block certain routes in winter. To avoid delays, checking the park’s official website for road conditions before traveling is recommended.

Best Seasons and Visiting Hours

The ideal months to visit Lower Yellowstone Falls are from May to September. During this period, river flow is at its peak, and the surrounding forest is vibrant green. Early morning (7–9 a.m.) or late afternoon (4–6 p.m.) visits offer the best light for photography, with fewer crowds. We should expect cooler temperatures in the canyon compared to other parts of the park, even in summer, so packing layers is essential.

Getting There: Transportation Options

Driving is the most convenient way to reach Lower Yellowstone Falls. From the park entrance, follow the Grand Loop Road towards Canyon Village. Parking is available at the main viewpoints, including Artist Point and Uncle Tom’s Trail. If we are not driving, joining a guided tour with pick-up from nearby towns like West Yellowstone or Cody is a good option. Public buses do not serve this area, so planning ahead for transport is key.

Viewpoints and Trails

- Artist Point: This is the most famous viewpoint, offering a panoramic view of Lower Falls and the canyon’s colorful walls. It’s a short, easy walk from the parking lot, taking around 10–20 minutes to reach.
- Uncle Tom’s Trail: For a closer and more adventurous experience, this trail descends via a steep staircase with 328 steps down to a platform near the base of the falls. The round-trip hike takes about 30–45 minutes. We should wear sturdy shoes and be ready for mist from the waterfall, which makes the steps slippery.
- Brink of Lower Falls Trail: This moderately difficult trail leads us to the top of the falls, offering a unique perspective of the river plunging into the canyon. It takes about 1–1.5 hours round-trip.

Dining and Nearby Lodging

After exploring, we can enjoy meals at Canyon Village or nearby lodges. Café and lodge meals typically range from USD 10–18, offering sandwiches, soups, and local specialties. For overnight stays, Yellowstone lodges and campsites are available. Prices for lodges range from USD 120–250 per night in summer, while campsites cost USD 30–60 per night. Booking in advance is highly recommended, especially in peak summer months. Staying overnight allows us to catch sunrise or sunset over the falls for incredible photo opportunities.

Tips for a Better Visit

- Bring water and light snacks, as facilities along trails are limited.
- Dress in layers; the canyon can be chilly and windy even in summer.
- Wear non-slip shoes for trails like Uncle Tom’s Trail.
- Use binoculars to spot wildlife along the canyon rim.
- Arrive early to avoid crowds at popular viewpoints.
- Carry a waterproof cover for cameras or phones due to mist from the falls.
