Nestled in the upper Verzasca Valley of Ticino, Switzerland, Starlaresc Lake is an alpine gem surrounded by peaks, meadows, and crystal-clear waters.
We visited in late August, when wildflowers were blooming, the weather was stable, and the long daylight allowed us to enjoy every moment of the hike. This destination is perfect for hikers, families, and nature lovers seeking a mix of adventure and serenity.

Getting There

We started at Tenero SBB station, taking postal bus 321 toward Sonogno, which costs around $5–$7 per person one-way. Buses run roughly every 1–2 hours from 6:30 AM to 8:30 PM in the summer. The bus journey itself is scenic, passing rivers, forests, and traditional alpine villages.
For those driving, there’s free parking near Pièe, just before house number 33 in Brione (Verzasca). This is the main starting point for the trail, making it convenient to organize backpacks and water before the hike.

The Hike

The trail to Starlaresc Lake is a linear route of 8.4 km, with 1,300 meters of elevation gain and loss. Without breaks, it takes about 4 hours and 50 minutes, but we recommend allocating 6–7 hours to enjoy the scenery and take rest stops. The path leads through alpine meadows, rocky terrain, and quiet forests, gradually revealing the sparkling lake.
The hike is moderately challenging and suitable for children aged 12+ or anyone comfortable with uphill walking. Best season: Late June to early September for open trails, mild weather, and long daylight.

Water and Refreshment Points

Water sources are limited along the trail. We carried 1.5 liters per person and the same for dogs, which was sufficient. Main refill points:
- Pianesc fountain, shortly after the trailhead.
- Starlaresc Hut, halfway to the lake, with fountains, shaded rest areas, and basic snacks.

Starlaresc Hut Accommodation & Dining

The hut is perfect for resting or staying overnight. Contact +41 (0)91 745 64 02 to reserve. Pricing:
- Dorm beds: ~$40 per night per person.
- Private rooms: ~$70–$90 per night per person.
- Meals: Snacks $5–$10; simple local dishes $15–$25.
It’s dog-friendly and a great spot to relax before continuing the hike. The hut is open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM during summer, but reservations are recommended during peak season.

Scenery and Highlights

Starlaresc Lake itself is stunning. Its calm water reflects the surrounding peaks and meadows, creating a picture-perfect scene. We walked along the shore, photographed reflections, and paused to soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Along the trail, we also discovered waterfalls, flowing streams, and panoramic views of the Verzasca Valley. Every turn offers a new perspective, making this hike a dream for nature lovers and photographers.

Nearby Accommodation & Dining Options

If you prefer staying in the valley rather than the hut:
- Brione Guesthouse: $80–$120 per night, breakfast included.
- Sonogno B&B: $60–$100 per night, light meals $10–$20.
- Tenero Hotels: $90–$150 per night, full-service restaurants with meals $15–$30.
We found that staying overnight in Sonogno or Brione allowed us to start the hike early without rushing and enjoy the evening calm in the valley.

Tips for an Enjoyable Trip

- Start early (7–8 AM) to enjoy quiet trails and soft morning light.
- Wear sturdy hiking shoes and layered clothing for variable temperatures.
- Carry enough water and snacks, as fountains are limited.
- Suitable for children 12+ and dogs with moderate stamina.
- Photography: Sunrise or late afternoon provides the best light for reflections.
- Mobile reception is limited; we carried a map and GPS device.
- Keep an eye on weather forecasts—summer storms can occur suddenly.

Ending the Adventure

Returning to Pièe, we felt accomplished and relaxed. The hike combines physical challenge, pristine nature, and tranquil lake views, making it an unforgettable experience. Even casual hikers can enjoy parts of the trail by resting at the hut or along viewpoints.

Final Thoughts

Lykkers, Starlaresc Lake is truly one of Ticino’s hidden treasures. With clear directions, practical stops, and breathtaking scenery, it’s perfect for a full-day adventure or a short alpine getaway. We hope this guide helps you plan your trip, soak in alpine beauty, and create lasting memories in the Verzasca Valley.
