If we dream of a Yosemite walk filled with rushing water, granite cliffs, green forest, and cool mist, Vernal Fall is a wonderful place to explore.
The 317-foot waterfall sits along the Merced River and can be reached from the Happy Isles area of Yosemite Valley. Unlike viewpoints beside the road, this landmark requires us to walk into the mountain scenery.
Let’s plan our visit with entrance fees, transport details, hiking times, accommodation costs, and dining choices so we can enjoy the scenery while keeping our trip practical.

Best Time to Visit
Late spring can be especially impressive because seasonal water flow makes the waterfall stronger and creates more mist.
- Spring: Strong flow and cool, wet trail conditions.
- Summer: Long daylight hours, but popular paths can be busy.
- Autumn: Cooler temperatures and comfortable walking conditions.
- Winter: Snow and ice can affect access, with some steep sections subject to temporary closure.
Starting early gives us cooler temperatures, more time for breaks, and a better chance of enjoying quieter sections of the trail.
