Where is Llanddwyn Island? How do we get there?
Llanddwyn Island forms part of Newborough Forest Nature Reserve. Driving to the reserve is one of the easiest ways for us to reach the walking route.

• The beach car park is one of the most convenient places to leave the car.
From the parking area, we follow the wooden walkway toward Llanddwyn Beach. Once we reach the shore, we turn right and walk toward the island. Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse can be seen ahead.
Tickets and Parking Fees
There is no entrance fee for Llanddwyn Island or for viewing Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse from outside. We can also reach the area along the Wales Coast Path.
The main cost is parking inside Newborough Forest Nature Reserve.

Tide Conditions

Walking to Tŵr Mawr

From the island entrance, Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse takes around 17 minutes to reach at a moderate pace. From the beach car park to the lighthouse, including photo stops, the journey can take around 40 minutes.
There are two routes toward the tower. One includes steps, while the other follows a wider path. We can choose whichever feels more comfortable.
Tŵr Mawr and Island Sights
Tŵr Mawr means "Big Tower" in Welsh. Built in 1873, the lighthouse stands around 10 meters high and replaced the smaller Tŵr Bach.
The island also features chapel remains, old pilot buildings, memorial features, and wide coastal viewpoints. A circular walking route lets us see more of these places instead of walking directly to the lighthouse and returning.
Llanddwyn is also linked with Saint Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. Traditional stories say that she lived on the island and established a spiritual community here, giving the location an important place in Welsh culture.

The best time depends mainly on the tide rather than a particular season. We should choose a day with suitable weather and carefully match our walking schedule with the tide table.
Early morning can offer quieter paths and softer light for photography. Comfortable weather is especially useful because much of the visit takes place outdoors and beside the coast.
