Heceta Head Lighthouse
Where is Heceta Head? How do we get there?
Heceta Head Lighthouse is about 12 miles north of Florence along U.S. Highway 101.
From Florence:
• Car: Around 20–25 minutes.
• Taxi or rideshare: Roughly $30–$50 one way, depending on availability.
From Yachats:
• Car: Around 25 minutes south along Highway 101.
From Eugene:
• Car: Around 1.5–2 hours.
• Rental car is generally the easiest choice for combining Heceta Head with other coastal stops.
After parking, we walk about half a mile uphill to reach the lighthouse. The trail gains roughly 150 feet, so comfortable shoes are helpful.
Tickets, Parking, And Opening Hours
There is no separate admission fee for the scenic viewpoint or the walk to the lighthouse.
Day-use parking:
• Parking permit: Around $10 per vehicle.
• We can purchase the permit on site or through Oregon State Parks.
Lighthouse first-floor visiting hours:
• March–October: 11:00 AM–3:00 PM.
• November–February: 11:00 AM–2:00 PM.
• Access depends on weather and available staff.
• Regular visitors do not need reservations.
• Upper levels are closed to visitors.
The lighthouse was first illuminated in 1894. The tower is 56 feet high and stands about 206 feet above the Pacific Ocean.
Best Time To Visit
Spring offers cooler weather and good opportunities for seasonal whale watching. Summer brings longer daylight and comfortable conditions for walking, although parking can become busier.
Autumn is quieter and can offer changing skies over the Pacific. Winter brings shorter visiting hours and more changeable coastal weather, so we should check conditions before setting out.
For photography, early morning usually gives us a quieter experience. If entering the lighthouse is important, we should plan our arrival during its daily visiting hours.
Hiking, Beach, And Wildlife
The half-mile lighthouse trail passes the historic keeper’s house before reaching the tower. Near the top, we can enjoy ocean views and read signs explaining the site's history and lighthouse equipment.
A sheltered beach is also accessible from the parking area. For a longer outing, trails continue toward Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park and the beach. The surrounding network connects with the Oregon Coast Trail.
Depending on the season, we may spot whales, sea lions, seabirds, Roosevelt elk, and marbled murrelets. Binoculars are useful if wildlife watching is part of our plan.
