Maintaining weight loss after stopping GLP-1 medication can be challenging. Treatments such as Wegovy and Zepbound help regulate appetite, but their effects diminish after discontinuation, potentially making weight regain more likely.
A study published in Obesity Science & Practice in October 2026 suggests that structured lifestyle support may help. Researchers found that participants using a weight-management app or receiving medically tailored meals regained less weight over four months than those receiving standard care.

Why Does Weight Regain Happen?

GLP-1-based medications influence hormones involved in appetite regulation, helping people feel fuller and consume fewer calories. Some treatments, including Zepbound, also act on additional hormonal pathways. When medication is discontinued, appetite may increase, making it harder to maintain previous eating habits and weight-loss results.
Earlier research has shown that substantial weight regain is common after stopping these treatments, although the amount and timing vary between individuals.
Scientists are increasingly interested in strategies that provide continued support, particularly through nutrition, physical activity and behavioural changes.

What Did The Study Find?

The study included 39 adults with an average age of approximately 50. Participants had an average starting weight of 86 kilograms and a mean body mass index of 31.4.
All had lost more than 10% of their body weight while taking GLP-1 medication and had discontinued treatment within the previous 30 days. Researchers randomly assigned participants to three groups: standard care, a digital weight-management programme or a medically tailored meal service.
Over four months, participants monitored their weight using connected scales and completed questionnaires about their experiences.

Can Wellness Apps Help?

One group received access to Noom, a digital weight-management programme focusing on nutrition, physical activity and behavioural habits. Participants were encouraged to spend at least 15 minutes daily recording meals, tracking exercise and completing educational activities. The programme also explored psychological and environmental influences on eating behaviour, helping users identify habits that could contribute to weight regain.
After four months, estimated weight regain was 3.6% in the app group, compared with 10.75% among participants receiving standard care. Although encouraging, these findings come from a small study and require confirmation through larger trials.

Do Personalised Meals Work?

Another group received ten portion-controlled meals each week, selected from more than 70 available options and delivered to their homes.
The meals were designed to support balanced nutrition and make portion management more convenient. Participants receiving the meal service experienced an estimated weight regain of 3.58%, closely matching the results observed in the app group. The findings suggest that practical dietary assistance may help people maintain healthier eating routines after medication ends.

What Do Medical Experts Recommend?

Dr Mir Ali, medical director of the MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center in California, explained that continued lifestyle support is important for long-term weight management. He recommended a balanced diet containing sufficient protein and vegetables, regular physical activity and ongoing medical supervision.
Dr Denise Pate, an internal medicine specialist in New York, emphasised that obesity management involves several interconnected factors, including nutrition, behaviour and medical care.
She also highlighted the importance of recognising hunger and fullness signals, managing portion sizes and developing sustainable eating habits.

Is Long-Term Medication Necessary?

Obesity is often a chronic condition, and some patients may benefit from continuing medication under medical supervision.
However, treatment decisions depend on individual health needs, previous responses and potential side effects.
The researchers acknowledged several limitations, including the small sample size and relatively short follow-up period.Larger studies are needed to determine whether digital programmes and medically tailored meals can prevent weight regain over longer periods.
For now, the findings suggest that structured nutritional guidance and behavioural support may help people preserve their progress after discontinuing GLP-1 medication.
