Oulanka National Park in northeastern Finland is a wonderful destination for travelers who enjoy peaceful forests, flowing rivers, and outdoor adventures.
Its landscape combines deep valleys, wooden suspension bridges, rocky rapids, and winding walking paths.

Walk the Famous Karhunkierros Trail

The Karhunkierros Trail is a major attraction for experienced hikers. The route covers approximately 82 kilometres between Hautajärvi and the Ruka area, passing through some of the region’s most impressive scenery. Completing the full route usually requires several days. Many hikers allow around five or six days to enjoy the journey without rushing. Along the way, the trail passes through forests, river valleys, rocky sections, and areas with designated resting places.
Travelers who prefer a shorter experience can choose selected sections instead. This makes it possible to enjoy Oulanka's landscapes without committing to a long-distance trek. The route is generally a summer hiking option, with the main season running from late May through October, depending on conditions.

Try the Pieni Karhunkierros Route

For visitors who want a memorable day outdoors, Pieni Karhunkierros is a popular alternative. This shorter route is approximately 12 kilometres long and features forest paths, rapids, and suspension bridges. Myllykoski is one of the scenic highlights along the route. The area offers attractive river views and a traditional mill setting, making it a natural place to pause and take photographs.
Although shorter than the full Karhunkierros, this walk still requires suitable footwear and enough time. Some sections include uneven ground, steps, and slopes, so a steady pace is recommended.

Enjoy Rivers and Outdoor Activities

Oulanka's waterways offer another perspective on the surrounding landscape. During suitable summer conditions, visitors can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, or guided paddling excursions on parts of the river system. Paddling provides a different way to appreciate the scenery, especially the quieter stretches surrounded by forest. Equipment rental and guided trips are available through local operators, although availability depends on the season and weather.
Those who prefer to remain on land can visit scenic locations such as Kiutaköngäs and Päähkänäkallio. Some viewpoints and natural attractions can be reached with relatively short walks, making them suitable additions to a relaxed itinerary.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Summer, particularly June through August, is a convenient period for hiking because many routes are more accessible. Longer daylight hours also make it easier to plan day trips and outdoor activities. However, popular trails and parking areas can become busy during peak holiday periods.
Autumn brings colourful foliage, creating attractive conditions for photography and quieter walks as the summer season winds down. Spring can be more challenging because melting snow, flooding, muddy paths, and icy sections may affect access. Winter offers a different experience, but the main Karhunkierros route is not maintained for winter hiking. Visitors should check current trail information and choose suitable equipment before setting out.
